Free YNAB alternative

A free YNAB alternative, compared honestly.

YNAB is a thoughtful, well-loved budgeting app with a clear method. As of October 2026 it costs about $109 a year. If you are looking for a free alternative, here is what you would gain and what you would give up with Balance.

In short

YNAB and Balance, briefly

YNAB (You Need A Budget) is built around zero-based budgeting: every unit of income gets a job before you spend it. It has years of refinement, a large community and a lot of teaching material. As of October 2026 it costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year after a 34-day free trial, (YNAB pricing), and it can link selected banks in the countries it supports.

Balance takes a different route. It is free, it never connects to your bank, and it gets your transactions from bank and card statement files (Excel or CSV), from Apple Pay and card SMS through iPhone Shortcuts, and from quick typed entries. Budgets are monthly limits per category rather than a zero-based plan.

Neither approach is right for everyone. The table and the two lists below are meant to help you choose, including the cases where YNAB is the better pick.

Where YNAB is better

  • Automatic bank import, if your bank is supported. Balance has no bank sync at all, by design.
  • A complete, proven method. If you want a strict zero-based system and the discipline it brings, YNAB teaches it better than anyone.
  • Maturity: native apps on iPhone and Android, years of polish and lots of teaching material.
  • Shared budgeting is a mature, long-standing feature in YNAB. Balance’s household sharing is newer.

Where Balance is better

  • Price. Balance is free, with no trial clock and no card on file. Only the optional AI features are part of a paid plan, Balance Plus.
  • Privacy. Balance never asks for a bank login, so there is no sync to break and no third party with access to your accounts.
  • Apple Pay. Once the Shortcut is set up, each payment is logged within seconds, sorted by merchant and category.
  • Less to learn. Set a few category limits and you are budgeting. No method to adopt first.
  • Hebrew and English, with formats in your currency.
