Please read these Terms carefully. They explain what you can expect from us, what we expect from you, and the limits of what Balance does.
These Terms of Use (the “Terms”) are an agreement between you and Balance Inc. (“Balance”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or using our website or apps (the “service”), you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy.
If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
You must be at least 18 years old (or the age of majority where you live) and able to form a binding contract to use Balance. You may only add financial data for accounts and cards that you own or are authorized to manage.
You are responsible for your account and everything that happens under it. In particular, you agree to:
- give accurate information and keep it up to date;
- keep your password private and use one you do not use anywhere else;
- tell us promptly at support@heybalance.app if you suspect unauthorized access.
Important
Balance does not connect to your bank or card company. Financial data comes only from what you add yourself: transactions you type, CSV files and card or bank statement files you import, payments you already made with Apple Pay and card charge text messages (SMS) that your own iPhone Shortcuts automations send to Balance, and receipts you scan. Balance only records payments that have already happened; it is never part of the payment itself.
Round-ups, savings goals, household “settle-up” amounts and overdraft plans are figures calculated inside Balance. No money moves when you use them. If you decide to move money, you do it yourself with your bank.
Nothing in the service is financial, investment, tax, credit or legal advice, and nothing in it is a recommendation that suits your personal situation. Budgets, “safe to spend” amounts, forecasts, the Money Calendar, installment projections, overdraft interest estimates and payoff plans, the Balance Score, insights, answers from Ask Balance and our free calculators and guides give general information based on the data you entered and on simple assumptions.
These figures are generated automatically and may be incomplete or wrong, for example when a transaction is missing, an import was read incorrectly or your bank calculates interest differently. Always check important figures with your bank or card company, and consider speaking to a qualified professional before making financial decisions such as taking a loan or changing your credit line.
Smart mode (optional AI). If you turn on Smart mode, some answers, search filters, category suggestions, quick-add entries, receipt totals and summaries are produced by an AI model (Claude, by Anthropic). AI output can be wrong, incomplete or out of date, even when it sounds confident. Treat it as general information, not advice, check it against your own transactions before relying on it, and review any suggested change before you save it. Smart mode is part of Balance Plus (see below), has daily usage limits, and we may change or pause it; Balance keeps working without it. Our Privacy Policy explains what data it sends and to whom.
Opening a Balance account is free and needs no payment details. Everything in Balance except the features that are part of Balance Plus (described below) is free, with no time limit. Features that are free do not become paid features on your account: Balance Plus only adds things on top.
What Plus includes. Balance Plus is an optional paid subscription. Today it includes Smart mode (described under “General information, not advice” above) and early access to features we are still trying out; extras we announce as “coming soon”, such as an iPhone Home Screen widget, are added when they are ready and are not promised by a date. We may change what Plus includes. If a change takes away something you pay for, we will tell you in advance, and you can cancel before it applies.
Plans and prices. Plus is offered monthly or yearly. Current prices are shown on our pricing page and in the app before you buy: $2.99 a month or $24.99 a year, or ₪9.90 a month or ₪79 a year in Israel. Prices may include or exclude taxes depending on where you live, as shown at checkout. Plus is personal to your account: it is not shared with other members of your household and cannot be transferred.
Free trial. Each account can start one free trial of Plus, lasting 14 days. No payment details are needed for the trial and it does not turn into a paid subscription: when it ends, Plus simply switches off and Balance keeps working without it. You only pay if you later choose a paid plan yourself.
How you pay. On the web, payments are processed by Stripe; in the iPhone app, by Apple through the App Store (In-App Purchase), under Apple's own terms. We never see or store your full card number. Paid plans are not open yet; until they are, only the free trial is available.
Automatic renewal. A paid plan renews automatically at the end of each month or year, and the price of the plan is charged to your payment method, until you cancel. If a renewal payment fails, Plus may stay on for a few days while the payment is retried, and then ends.
Cancelling. You can cancel at any time. For a plan bought on the web, go to Settings → Balance Plus and manage it in the Stripe customer portal. For a plan bought in the iPhone app, use the iPhone Settings app → your name → Subscriptions (Apple does not let us cancel it for you). After you cancel, Plus stays on until the end of the period you already paid for and does not renew. Deleting your Balance account does not cancel an App Store subscription, so cancel it with Apple too.
Refunds. For a plan bought on the web, contact us at support@heybalance.app within 14 days of a charge and we will refund that charge. This does not limit any right you have under consumer protection law, including the right to cancel a distance transaction under the Israeli Consumer Protection Law, 5741-1981, and its regulations. Plans bought through the App Store are billed by Apple, and refunds are handled by Apple under its own policies (you can ask at reportaproblem.apple.com).
Price changes. We may change Plus prices. We will tell you at least 30 days before a new price applies to your subscription, and it applies only from your next renewal after that notice. If you do not agree, you can cancel before then. For App Store subscriptions, Apple may also ask you to agree to a price increase.
To log Apple Pay payments or card SMS automatically, you create a Shortcut key in Balance and add it to an Apple Shortcuts automation on your iPhone. A key can only add transactions to your account. Please:
- keep your keys private, and revoke a key in Settings if a device is lost or you no longer use it;
- only send payments, messages and statement files for cards and accounts that are yours or that you are allowed to manage; and
- check what was imported. Statement and SMS formats change, and Balance may misread, skip or double-count a line.
You can create or join one household and choose which of your accounts to share with it. When you share an account, every member of the household can see that account and its transactions (including notes, splits and receipts), and can add, edit and delete transactions in it. Members also see your name and email address. Accounts you do not share stay private.
Only invite people you trust, and only share accounts you are entitled to share. Settle-up amounts (“who owes whom”) are a calculation to help you talk about money; they are not a bill, and Balance does not collect or transfer money between members. You can stop sharing an account or leave a household at any time; the owner of a household can remove members.
You agree not to:
- use the service for anything unlawful, fraudulent or harmful;
- add or import data for accounts you are not authorized to manage;
- probe, scan or test the vulnerability of our systems, except under our responsible disclosure process;
- reverse engineer, scrape or copy the service, or use automated means to access it without permission;
- interfere with or disrupt the service or other users; or
- resell or provide the service to others without our written agreement.
The service relies on third parties, such as our hosting and email providers, Anthropic (only if you turn on Smart mode), our payment processors (Stripe on the web, Apple in the iPhone app), Apple's Shortcuts app on your iPhone, the files and messages your bank or card company provides, and public favicon services we use to fetch merchant logos. Your use of Apple's and your bank's services is subject to their own terms. We are not responsible for third-party services, including delays or errors in the data they provide. Merchant names and logos belong to their owners and are shown only to help you recognize a transaction; they do not mean the merchant endorses or works with Balance.
The service, including its software, design, text and the Balance name and logo, is owned by Balance Inc. and protected by intellectual property laws. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the service for your own personal, non-commercial purposes in line with these Terms.
You keep ownership of the content and data you add to Balance. You give us permission to use it only to provide and improve the service for you, as described in our Privacy Policy.
To the extent permitted by law, the service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not promise that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free or that data from third parties will be complete or current.
To the extent permitted by law, Balance Inc. will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, savings, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the service.
Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or one hundred US dollars. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations, so they may not apply to you, and nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
You can stop using Balance and delete your account at any time in Settings; your data is then deleted as described in our Privacy Policy. If you share accounts with a household, you choose whether those accounts are deleted or handed over to the household. We may suspend or end your access if you seriously or repeatedly breach these Terms, if required by law, or to protect users or the service. Where reasonable, we will tell you why and give you a chance to export your data first. We may also change or stop offering features, or the whole service; if we shut Balance down, we will give you reasonable notice to export your data. If we end a paid Plus subscription for a reason other than your breach of these Terms, we will refund the unused part of a plan bought on the web (for App Store plans, we will help you ask Apple for a refund).
These Terms are governed by the laws of [jurisdiction to be confirmed], without regard to conflict of law rules. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of [venue to be confirmed], unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring proceedings locally.
Before filing a claim, please contact us so we can try to resolve the issue informally.
We may update these Terms as the service evolves. If a change is material, we will notify you by email or in the app before it takes effect. If you keep using Balance after the change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms. A change that would make you pay for something never applies to you unless you opt in to it. Price changes for Plus follow the notice rules in the Subscriptions section.
