Frequently asked questions
Balance is a personal finance app that brings your spending, budgets, savings goals and subscriptions into one calm view. Transactions come from bank and card statement files (CSV or Excel), from Apple Pay or card SMS through iPhone Shortcuts, from receipt scans or from quick add, and smart rules sort them into categories. It never asks for a bank login.
Most people are up and running in a few minutes: create an account, import a CSV or set up the Apple Pay automation, add a budget with a suggested limit and, if you like, a savings goal. You can always fine-tune later.
Read the getting started guideNo, and you can’t: Balance never connects to your bank or asks for a bank password. Import the statement file your bank or card company lets you download, log Apple Pay payments automatically, or type a quick add like “42.5 coffee yesterday”.
Balance runs in your browser and can be installed as an app on your phone or computer. It is available in English and Hebrew (right to left), with light and dark mode.
Download a CSV statement from your bank or card website, then choose Import CSV in Balance. You can import more files later; your smart rules sort new rows into categories automatically.
You keep paying with your own Apple Pay. On your iPhone you add the Balance shortcut (one tap where available, or by following the short guide in Settings → Apple Pay), then turn on an automation in the Shortcuts app that runs after each Apple Pay payment. Balance records the merchant and amount and categorizes it by your rules. It never sees your card number and there is no bank login.
No. Balance has no connection to your bank and cannot transfer money, pay bills or change anything in your accounts. It only works with the transactions you bring in.
Accounts are the places your money lives, such as checking, savings, a credit card, cash or investments. Give each one an opening balance and Balance keeps it current from your transactions, adds everything up into your net worth and shows how it changes over time.
Yes. Open any transaction to edit the amount, date or category, split it across categories or attach a receipt. If you delete one by mistake, Undo brings it back.
Set a monthly limit for the categories you care about. Balance suggests a limit from your average over the last 3 months, shows a safe amount to spend per day, and sends a notification when a category reaches 80% and again if it goes over.
Learn about budgetsCreate a smart rule, for example “description contains wolt → Dining”. Rules sort every new or imported transaction that arrives without a category, and you can preview what a rule would change before applying it to past ones.
Each month starts fresh. You can look back at earlier months to see which budgets you kept, and move what you saved into a savings goal yourself.
Give a goal a name, a target amount and an optional date. Balance shows how much to save each month to get there. Log contributions or withdrawals as you go, or turn on round-ups so every expense rounds up to the next ₪1, ₪5 or ₪10 (at 1×, 2× or 3×) and Balance counts the difference toward the goal. No money is moved; it stays in your own bank.
Learn about savings goalsBalance never asks for your bank login. Passwords are stored only as salted scrypt hashes, sessions use an httpOnly cookie and only a hash of each session token is stored, and sign-in attempts are rate limited. On a Mac you can lock the app with Touch ID.
Read about securityNo. We do not sell your personal or financial data and there are no ads in the app. Ask Balance answers your questions on your device. They are sent to an AI service (Claude, by Anthropic) only if you turn on Smart mode in Settings, and you can turn it off any time.
Read the privacy policyYes, on a Mac with Touch ID. Turn on the Touch ID lock in Settings and Balance asks for your fingerprint each time you open it, with your password as a fallback. Two-factor authentication is not available yet.
In Settings you can export your data as CSV or JSON at any time, or permanently delete your account and all of its data.
See data & permissionsYes. Opening an account is free, with no card and no limits on accounts, budgets or goals. Balance Plus is an optional plan that adds Smart mode (AI answers by Claude) and a few extras, with a free 14-day trial. What is free stays free.
See pricingThe free trial needs no cancelling: it simply ends after 14 days and nothing is charged. For a paid plan bought on the web, open Settings → Balance Plus. For one bought in the iPhone app, open the iPhone Settings app → your name → Subscriptions. You keep Plus until the end of the period you paid for. Your free account keeps working either way.
Yes, for free. In Settings → Household, invite up to 5 other people to a shared household. Each person keeps their own login and private accounts, and chooses which accounts to share; the household gets shared budgets, shared savings goals and a “who paid what” view.
Balance is new and changing quickly. Answers describe the current version.
