Budgeting with irregular income
A budget for income that never sits still.
The problem
Why normal budgets fail on irregular income
Most budgeting advice quietly assumes the same salary on the same day each month. If your income is uneven, a budget built on your average will be wrong in almost every month: too loose in good months, impossible in lean ones.
The real risk is the gap between months. A great month feels like permission to spend, and the lean month that follows has nothing to fall back on. Over a year the income may be perfectly fine; it is the timing that hurts.
The fix is not to predict your income better. It is to stop spending directly from it. You pay yourself a steady amount from a buffer, and the buffer absorbs the swings.
What you can do today
The baseline-and-buffer method
You need the last six to twelve months of income. The free CFPB income tracker is a handy worksheet if you do not have one.
- 1
Find your baseline month
List your monthly income after tax and pick one of the lowest months, not the average. That is the amount you will plan to live on.
- 2
Cover the must-pays first
Rent, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments and groceries come out of the baseline first. If they do not fit, that is the most important number to work on.
- 3
Set aside tax, if you are self-employed
Move a fixed share of every payment into a separate pot for tax and social security as soon as it arrives. Ask an accountant what share fits your situation.
- 4
Build a one-month buffer
In months above your baseline, the extra goes into a buffer until it holds one month of baseline spending. From then on, you pay yourself the baseline each month from the buffer.
- 5
Decide in advance what a good month is for
Once the buffer is full, split surplus months by a fixed rule, for example half to savings goals, a quarter to debt and a quarter to enjoy. Deciding ahead stops a good month from disappearing.
- 6
Spend by the day, not the month
Divide what is left for flexible spending by the days remaining. A daily number adjusts automatically when a payment is late. Try the safe-to-spend calculator.
